 Abstract
Tobacco products contain several types of additives for various purposes. Particularly, flavor chemicals have been controversial due to the harmful and attractive effects of smoking. Domestic and foreign research papers about the detection of additives and flavoring agents in tobacco products, including the toxicity or problems of detected flavoring chemicals, were reviewed. As a consequence of reviewing research articles, it was revealed that tobacco products contained hundreds of flavor chemicals, and the total concentration of these flavoring components present in heated tobacco products with flavor capsules was seven times than that of traditional tobacco products. Among the flavoring components, in menthol products, the methanol content reached about 80% of the total flavor chemicals. Moreover, even in non-menthol products, the menthol content accounted for 0.1%-5.5%. In conclusion, using flavor capsules in tobacco products should be banned, and regulations of the use of flavor chemicals including menthol should be discussed.
