An Analysis of Activities Related to the Tobacco Control Policies of the Health and Welfare Committee of the 21st National Assembly

 Abstract
Background: A revision of the laws is mandated to protect people from tobacco use. We aimed to examine the activities and awareness of the Health and Welfare Committee members of the 21st National Assembly apropos the tobacco control policy of the Committee and its reinforcement.
Methods: We developed a survey questionnaire to probe the awareness of the committee members apropos the tobacco control policy. We collected data from the bill Information website to study the law revision activities of the committee members. We also conducted an Internet search to collect news articles reporting activities related to the tobacco control policies instituted by the committee members.
Results: Only two (8.3%) of the 24 committee members participated in the survey. The survey revealed a gap between the facts and the awareness and knowledge of the members. Of the 24 committee members, 18 (75.0%) tendered revisions to the tobacco control policies inscribed in the National Health Promotion Act and the Tobacco Business Act. The committee members were interested in amending the laws on expanding non-smoking areas, controlling tobacco advertisements and promotions, and issuing pictorial health warnings on tobacco packaging, and 19 of them promoted activities related to the tobacco control policy. They launched efforts to amend the law (48.7%), disseminate the findings and data on the tobacco control policy (35.1%), and deliver interviews on the topic of tobacco control (10.8%).
Conclusion: Better communication and collaboration are necessary between the stated committee and the Korean Society for Research on Nicotine and Health (KSRNT).
