 Abstract
Background: Heated tobacco products (HTPs) are gaining popularity in South Korea. This study analyzed the support for HTP device regulation and factors associated with it.
Methods: The study included 7,000 South Korean adults (males, 2,300; females, 4,700). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusting for age, sex, education level, marital status, income level, the status of tobacco products, belief of relative safety of HTP use compared with combustible cigarettes (CCs), and knowledge on HTP regulation.
Results: Of 7,000 participants, 6,198 (88.5%) agreed to regulate HTP devices. Support for HTP devices was significantly higher among the participants aged 50–69 years (odds ratio [OR], 1.40; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12–1.75) than among those of other age groups, among females (OR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.35–1.92) than among males, among those with a 4-year college degree or higher (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.23–1.68) than among those with lower degrees, among former tobacco product users (OR, 8.74; 95% CI, 5.23–14.60) than among non-users of tobacco products, among the respondents who believed that HTPs were more harmful than CCs (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.55–2.86) than among those who believed otherwise, and among the respondents with the knowledge on HTP regulation (OR, 3.49; 95% CI, 2.67–4.56) than among those with no knowledge on the same.
Conclusion: Support for HTP device regulation among South Korean adults was found to be strong. This would help introduce regulation of HTP devices in the future.
